A book not banned...YET.
Thanks for the link, Jan.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky may not make next year's freshman reading list at Commack High School in Long Island if complaining parents have their way.
The questionable scene in this book? A date rape. Nope. No fourteen year old should be subjected to this kind of information. Let's get it off the list immediately. Yes, I know, I know. It could be introduced a little less graphically and more "gently," being such a soft subject. Then the kids would really want to read it, because it would seem oh so realistic.
Sorry, sometimes the sarcasm gets the better of me.
Kids know this stuff exists. They know it's not pretty. Let them read the book if they want. I know I will.
As soon as I do, I'll write a friendly letter to the school board, giving them a little support. A little encouragement to keep the book on the freshman reading list. Why wait until a book is banned? Or in this case, probably just quietly replaced with an unobtrusive little book that's more comfortable for the parents?
Anyway, it can't hurt to try:

It's an excellent book. The writing is amazing. It deals with a lot of difficult subjects, but that's what YA is all about. Teens may have to face these things some day and books can help them to cope.

It's important to put stuff like this out there. Some of the most uncomfortable subjects are the ones that kids are most likely to identify with...to need.

I'd heard this book was good. You make me want to read it even more. I abhor book banning! Get real. Like if you take the book off the shelf, 14 year old girls won't get raped anymore. I mean really. EVERYBODY knows these rapists are really bookworms in disguise and they get their ideas from those books! Ok. Breathe. Breathe. You really got me riled up Julie. I'm with ya on this one.

I'm so glad that we can keep each other informed and spread the word. The more aware we are, the more chance we can make change.

Hey, I've had that book home from the library (the teen librarian recommended it to me), but I didn't get around to reading it before I had to take it back. Now I need to go back and get it!
